When it comes to dropping weight most of us think it’s as simple as exercising more and eating less. Whilst of course this is a big part of the equation, there is also a NEAT little trick you can do to help you achieve better results.

NEAT, or non-exercise activity thermogenesis to all you wannabe scientists out there, is the amount of calories your body burns during non-exercise activity.

At rest your body burns around 1.5 calories per minute to perform its most basic functions, but as soon as you start moving, dancing, emailing or even twitching you can increase this by quite a considerable amount.

So, this begs the question…

What’s more important, my hour of exercise or what I do in the other 23 hours of the day?

Well the simple answer is that they are both as important as each other in playing their part in weight loss.

However, if you lay in your bed, sit on the sofa, take a car, bus or train to work and then sit at your desk all day more than you get up and move around, you could make a few simple changes that would add up to a big overall improvement in your health and weight loss.

Nowadays everyone thinks adding more training into your week is the best way to achieve better results. However, there is only so much training you can do and once you have reached your limit, NEAT could be the hidden answer.

So, how to do you increase your NEAT I hear you ask?

Well basically, move more. Your aim should be to hit around 10000 steps per day.

For some of you, at first this may seem more difficult due to work, but it’s amazing how making small changes to your day and how you move soon add up.

If you are struggling try these tips

  1. Walk as much of your journey to work as you can. This could mean getting off one stop earlier or getting on one step further than where you usually get on.
  2. Always take the stairs rather than using the lift or escalator. For those of you in London just remember the right side is for standing…so get on that left side.
  3. Use your lunch break to soak up some fresh air and go for a walk. We know it's easy to get caught in the trap of working through your lunch, but not only will adding steps in here help with burning calories, but it is also a great way to reset your brain and reduce stress.
  4. Take walking meetings and phone calls where possible. I know you may worry about looking funny talking into that headset…you definitely will, but its all for a good cause!

But there are other activities which can also help.

Gardening, cleaning, playing with your kids, dog walking and maybe best of all, sex. Yes, you got it, sex burns calories…well if you do it right. It also helps to get rid of headaches…so don’t let that be an excuse!!

So there you go. It really is that easy to burn extra calories throughout the day without having to find more time in the gym. Try to make these small changes, you’l soon start to see and feel the difference.
